According to company spokeswoman Emily Weiss, the store employs six to 10 people. Catherine Kiger is the store’s manager.

In addition to convenience and value, Weiss said Dollar General offers a focused selection of national and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health and beauty care products. “About a third of the merchandise in Dollar General is sold for just $1 or less,” she said.

In addition to its daily business, Dollar General is a longtime supporter of literacy. Weiss said the store provides information on where lessons in reading, speaking or writing English are available, as well as information on where General Education Diploma (GED) classes and testing are being offered.

In-store brochures feature a perforated reply card n pre-addressed and pre-stamped n to ProLiteracy America, Weiss said. Once received, the organization forwards the requests to the appropriate adult education office in each state, making sure the right service is provided for each respondee’s particular need, she noted.
