Wal-Mart came to Mathew this week bearing goodwill for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office anti-drug program.
Store manager Annette Soignet presented Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre with a $5,000 check to benefit the program.
DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) is offered in all Lafourche elementary schools. Specially-trained deputies lead the classes, which are designed to introduce fifth graders to the negative affects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
The program also teaches the skills youngsters need to make good decisions and choices in life, LPSO Public Information Officer Larry Weidel said.
“Wal-Mart has been an outstanding corporate citizens that gives back to the community,” Webre said, praising the Wal-Mart Foundation for its continued support. “Hundreds of jobs are provided by Wal-Mart throughout Lafourche Parish, and the new Matthews store will attract shoppers from all over the region.”
The Matthews store open Friday.
