Local law enforcement agencies are gearing up for this year’s “America’s Night Out Against Crime” held every August.

The crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by local law enforcement agencies as part of the National Association of Town Watch and generates support for local anti-crime programs like Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), Team Spirit and Neighborhood Watch.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said, “The men and women of this agency go above and beyond every day in doing what they can to make the parish safe. This is an opportunity for every man, woman and child in Lafourche to invest themselves in that effort.”

During “Night Out,” residents gather for cookouts and block parties. This year’s event is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, between 6 and 9 p.m.

Interim Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis believes the night out against crime helps to strengthen the neighborhood spirit, and the police-community partnerships, while sending a message to criminals that neighborhood watches are organized and fighting back against crime.

“Most criminals do not like to venture into neighborhoods where many eyes are on watch,” Duplantis said. “One of our biggest aids has been calls from neighbors that see things that raise a suspicion in their neighborhoods.”

“These events help promote an invaluable partnership between the community members and law enforcement,” Thibodaux Police Chief Craig Melancon added.
