TROPICAL UPDATE: Track shifts to the west; rain event expected

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for a broad area of the Louisiana coast that includes the parishes of Terrebonne and Lafourche.

The warning, issued Monday afternoon, means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area during the next 24 to 36 hours. Tropical storm force winds are those from 39 mph and above.

At 4:00 p.m. a disturbance without circulation, but with winds nearing tropical storm force, was still well south of the coast, at latitude 24.7 North, longitude 88.7 West. The system is moving toward the north near 9 mph. A turn toward the north-northwest is expected tonight, followed by a slower motion toward the northwest on Tuesday and Tuesday night. On the forecast track, the disturbance will move toward the Louisiana coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Additionally, there is a flash flood warning for the western area of Terrebonne.

Sand and sandbags are currently available at the following locations in Terrebonne Parish. The Terrebonne Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness advises residents desiring sandbags to bring their own shovels.
