The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is working closely with other parish agencies to monitor Tropical Storm Barry as it approaches the coast.
Sheriff Craig Webre said all information relevant to Lafourche Parish can be found at www.LPSO.net/STORM.
As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, a recommended evacuation has been issued for all areas south of the Leon Theriot Lock in Golden Meadow, including Port Fourchon.
Barring a significant change, officials plan to issue a mandatory evacuation for that same area beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday.
If that occurs, a shelter of last resort will be opened at the Raceland Recreation Center on 241 Recreation Drive in Raceland.
As of noon, a mandatory evacuation has already been issued for Grand Isle.
All residents and business owners are being encouraged to make preparations today because conditions are expected to begin to deteriorate tomorrow.
There is no closure of La. Highway 1 right now, but officials expect the road to close at some point.
“Now is the time to complete your storm preparations,” said Sheriff Webre. “We encourage all residents to pick up their emergency supplies and secure their property today. There is still uncertainty about the exact timing of inclement weather on Friday. Don’t wait until it’s too late.”
LPSO’s Patrol Section will be supplemented with additional deputies beginning on Friday morning to attend to calls for service.
Webre said he’s also assigned trustees to help in filling sandbags at the parish’s pickup locations.
Per Lafourche Government, all residents should bring their own shovel and should plan to fill the bags on their own – just in case some aren’t available upon arrival.
The offices of the Lafourche Parish District Attorney and Clerk of Court are closed on Friday, but the 17th Judicial District Court will be open, so people expected in court should attend.
The Lafourche Parish Assessor’s Office has not yet decided if it will open or close.
Garbage pickup in the unincorporated areas of Lafourche has been canceled for Friday and Saturday, so residents are asked to secure their bins.
The Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter is currently at full capacity. Therefore, deputies will be unable to pick up stray animals except in the event of a bite, injured animal, or other extreme circumstances.
