The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center will produce its Wetlands Youth Summit on Saturday at the Terrebonne Parish North Branch Library between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The event is touted as bringing student leaders together to discuss important issues relating to coastal restoration and preservation.

Two juniors and two seniors from high schools in St. Mary, Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes will participate in the event to develop a Wetlands Youth council. The students will then meet quarterly to share parish-specific issues and work to design the following year’s summit.

This year’s summit includes workshops including one by the Environmental Protection Agency to explain how the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act functions locally and how funding decisions are made. The LSU School of Coast and Environment will conduct a workshop that focused on land ethics.
