Carril “Poochie” J. Cooks Jr., 46, a native of New Orleans, La., and resident of Houma, La., died Sunday, June 30, 2013.


Mr. Cooks was a God fearing man. He was generous, outgoing, kindhearted, adventurous and enjoyed helping others. He was a U.S. Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He was a law enforcement officer with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office where he was a member of the special response team and worked as a training instructor. He was a Mason, boxing instructor and mentor with local youth. His favorite past time was riding with the Khaotic RiderZ of Morgan City, La.

He is survived by his daughters, Janessa Cooks and Courtney and Hailey Verret; son, Caleb Cooks; brothers, Romal and Harold Cooks; sister, Angla Mosely; grandmother, Mabel Stepter; first wife, Doris Cooks; and second wife, Dawn Verret-Cooks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carril Sr. and Mary Cooks; and grandparents, Adam and Leola Meade and Paul Cooks.


Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 5, at Hargrave Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in Patterson, La., with burial to follow at Morgan City Cemetery. (Hargrave)
