The Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions used a 12-3 run over the final 3:58, to defeat the Nicholls Lady Colonels, 82-71, Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.

“I thought we played hard today, but we did not do a good job of controlling the ball in the crucial parts of the game,” said Nicholls head coach Mark Cook. “We did not shoot the ball well in the second half, and although we only had nine turnovers for the entire game, six of those came in the second half during important times. We were only a few plays away from getting the win, but now we will just have to come back and work hard, to try and eliminate those mistakes at the end of the game.”

The Lady Lions (11-7, 3-2 SLC) shot 48 percent from the field, including 83 percent from three-point range, while the Lady Colonels (3-13, 1-4 SLC) shot 42 percent from the field and 67 percent from beyond the arc. SLU finished 18-of-20 (90 percent) from the free-throw line. Nicholls shot 64 percent (9-of-14) from the line. The Lady Lions out rebounded the Lady Colonels, 41-26.

Nicholls had three players finish the game in double figures. Claire Barry led all scorers with 19 points, while Jamie Octave and Katherine Plummer contributed 16 and 14 points, respectively. Octave is now only 17 points away from becoming just the eighth player in Lady Colonel basketball history to reach the 1,000 career-point plateau.

Four SLU players also finished in double digits. Tina Wilson scored 18 points, followed by Brooke Necaise’s 12 points. Kristy Carlin and Carment Labat added 11 points apiece. Jazmin Cain had 11 rebounds.

The first half saw the Lady Lions jump out to a quick 16-7 lead in the first 4:37. However, the Lady Colonels went on 13-4 run over the next 3:59 to tie the score at 20-20. After a Carlin jumper put SLU back up by two, 22-20, Barry drilled a three-pointer with 10:45 remaining in the half, to give Nicholls their first lead of the game at 23-22. Following two made free throws by Williams, which gave the Lady Lions a 33-31 lead, the Lady Colonels’ ended the half on an 11-4 run to head into the locker room with a 42-37 lead.

SLU opened the second half with five consecutive points to quickly tie the score at 42-42 with 19:10 remaining in the game. With the score tied at 48-48, the Lady Lions went on a 6-0 run to take a 54-48 lead with 12:31 to play. A Labat three-pointer later gave SLU a 70-60 advantage with 6:29 remaining in the second half. Barry then single-handedly brought the Lady Colonels back to within two points, as she scored eight unanswered points in a 2:31 time span, courtesy of two three-pointers and two made free-throws, which cut the Lady Lion lead to 70-68. SLU was able to hold off Nicholls by going 8-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch, to take the 82-71 conference victory.

The Lady Colonels return to action on Thursday, as they travel to Natchitoches, La. to take on Northwestern State. Tip off is set for 6:30 p.m.

Nicholls’ men drop close one to Southeastern, 75-69

The Colonels fought hard in an exciting game at Southeastern, but fell to the Lions by the score of 75-to-69 on Saturday night in the University Center.

“I told my guys that I was extremely proud of the way they fought tonight,” said head coach J.P. Piper. “I felt that if we would have had played our best basketball in the first 15 minutes of the game, maybe we would have had a different outcome.”

After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Colonels went on a 12-4 run to head into the locker room down 35-to-33. Senior forward James Dixon was a major part of the run on both ends of the floor by pouring in 10 points in the first half to go along with eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Dixon finished the game with a new career-high in points with 16 and in rebounds with nine.

Senior guard/forward Stefan Blaszczynski, who only made on shot from field goal range, struggled to find the basket in the game as he could only muster a season-low 10 points.

The second half was a back and forth battle that consisted of eight lead changes as the Colonels late first half success continued. Sophomore Ryan Bathie and freshman center Mitch Boyce came out hot in the second half, and combined to score the Colonels first 17 points in the second stanza. Their combined strong play set the tone for the second half, but the Colonels could not hold onto the lead. Bathie finished the game with 15 points, while Boyce closed the contest with 11 points and three rebounds.

“Bathie played well in the second half and really sparked us,” said Piper. “Even though Mitch had more points in the game against Texas-Arlington, I personally thought that this was his best all around performance of the season.”

The Lions (11-7, 3-2) Daryl Cohen hit a three pointer at the five-minute mark in the final half to give Southeastern the lead, which they would never relinquish. Nicholls would cut into the lead, but could not get closer than two points for the remainder of the game.

Nicholls will be back in action at Stopher Gym on Thursday January 25 at 6:30 p.m. against defending Southland Conference Champion Northwestern State. It will also be academic night, as 85 student-athletes will be honored at the game.
