A different South Terrebonne squad showed up against Ellender Friday in the two schools’ second meeting of the season.

And as a result, there was a much different outcome.

The Gators overcame a 12-9 halftime deficit to defeat the Patriots, 32-12, in a not-so-close rival game at The Swamp.

The victory helped South Terrebonne exact a degree of revenge for its earlier 27-17 loss to Ellender at the Terrebonne Parish Jamboree.

It also marked the Gators’ 13th consecutive regular-season victory against the Patriots.

&#8220Our offense and defensive coaching staff did a real good job of game-planning this week,” explained South Terrebonne coach Richard Curlin. &#8220We knew we would give up a big play but we had to settle down, control the football and keep it away from them, and tonight I think we did that. We tried to make them work for it. We’re just going to try and enjoy this win and get back to work on Saturday.”

The first quarter started off promising for the Patriots when Jesse Turner ran in a 69-yard touchdown in his team’s first drive of the game.

Gators’ kicker Ben Landry answered back with a 43-yard field goal to close the deficit to 6-3.

Ronkeem Howard intercepted a Blake Martin pass on South Terrebonne’s next possession, but the Patriots turned the ball right back over when Hosea Chatman was intercepted by Derek Hutchinson, who ran the ball 25 yards for a touchdown.

The Patriots, however, went ahead 12-9 when Jonathan Guidry found the end zone from 11 yards out with 39 seconds left before the half.

The action picked up again with 7:03 left in the third quarter when South Terrebonne’s Byron Friloux pounded in a 1-yard touchdown run.

Trailing 15-12, the Patriots tried to mount a comeback late in the third quarter. Costly penalties, however, hurt them on their next drive, as a holding and delay-of-game penalty forced Ellender to punt.

South Terrebonne capitalized on the penalties and started to run away with the game when Friloux ran in a 19-yard touchdown run at 9:24 in the fourth.

The Gators never looked back.

Demetrius Boyd added another touchdown and Landry booted a 29-yard field goal to preserve the win.

Landry’s leg kept Ellender at a distance.

&#8220It came down to field position,” Curlin said. &#8220They (Patriots) have way too many weapons to stop them all, but having someone like (kicker) Ben Landry with six touchbacks helps out a lot.”

Friloux led the 307-yard rushing attack of the Gators with 22 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

Chatman finished 3 for 12 for 38 yards and two interceptions. Turner ended up with 149 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots loss.

The Gators (2-0) host Comeaux High (1-1) next Friday at The Swamp. The Patriots (1-1) travel to Jesuit on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
