Legislative Action in Education: From Religious Displays to Health Initiatives

The House Education Committee voted 10-3 to advance a bill to require public schools to display the 10 Commandments. In other action involving education this week, the House voted 74-28 Wednesday to ban COVID vaccine requirements at K-12 schools and colleges.

Conservative priorities continue to push forward in Regular Session

Louisiana legislators continued Wednesday to advance conservative priorities, pushing forward bills to limit discussion of gender and sexuality in schools, to stop teachers from using a child’s preferred name or pronouns without parental consent if they differ from the child’s biological sex, limit bathroom use by biological gender and to provide state money for private school education. Other bills would authorize police officers to arrest migrants who are not in the country legally and prohibit protests outside of an individual’s home.

State Rep. introduces bill to call for a convention to streamline the Louisiana constitution

HB 800, sponsored by Rep. Beau Beaullieu, R-New Iberia, calls for a limited constitutional convention and was introduced to the House and Governmental Affairs committee. The panel will not vote on the bill until next week.
